As a general rule, neonatologists provide the following services

  • Diagnose and treat neonates with conditions such as respiratory issues, infections, and birth abnormalities.
  • Offer medical supervision and coordination for newborns who are premature, ill, or in need of surgery.
  • Ensure that critically ill neonates receive the necessary nutrition for recovery and proper growth.
  • Assist in the care of newborns during cesarean deliveries or other deliveries if the mother or baby has a medical condition that requires medical attention.
  • Treat neonates with life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Consult with obstetricians, pediatricians, and family doctors about the health of newborns.
  • Typically work in maternity wards or neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).

Provide short-term follow-up care after a baby is discharged from the unit, in collaboration with the baby’s pediatrician.

More About

From the age of two to five, your child’s doctor will see them annually for “well-child visits.” After the age of five, annual checkups will continue. When your child is ill, contact your doctor. The doctor will:

    • Conduct a physical exam
    • Provide a list of recommended vaccinations
    • Monitor your child’s growth, behavior, and development according to age-specific milestones
    • Diagnose and address your child’s illnesses and other health concerns
    • Explain your child’s health, dietary, and exercise needs
    • Answer questions about your child’s development and growth
    • If necessary, refer you to and collaborate with a specialist for treatment beyond the physician’s expertise
